Charlotte City Council green lights rezoning petition that would remove popular bar

Plaza Midwood's Two Buck Saloon may be torn down and replaced by a mixed-use development.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A popular bar in Plaza Midwood may soon be torn down after a rezoning petition was approved at Tuesday evening's Charlotte City Council zoning meeting.

The council approved Clachan Properties' petition for a development project that could tear down the Two Buck Saloon in Plaza Midwood to create a mixed-use development at that site. The site could include apartments, retail or restaurants.

The bar is located on Hawthorne Lane in front of an apartment complex. It also has a second location on Albemarle Road.

WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker spoke to many Charlotteans, who say Plaza Midwood is like a canvas. Each business is different in its own way and works together to make a unique area.

Some residents spoke out against the potential development because they said it wouldn't fit the area.

Phillip Gussman with Plaza Midwood Merchants Association works to preserve the neighborhood.

"We want to see our neighborhood succeed," Gussman said. “The rezoning was one of the larger pieces that take a whole lot of money to develop, it was one that we thought we weren’t going to have the power to retain or preserve.”

Gussman said he and others welcome change, expansion and growth. Plaza Midwood Merchants Association works to protect the long-standing buildings in the neighborhood, which help make up a part of the overall look of Plaza Midwood.

Gussman said the best thing a business can do is own the property the business is on or have a good relationship with the landlord.

Developers are hoping to create a walkable community with access to public transit. The developers also added it would align with the City's 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker spoke with Mayor Pro Tem Dante Anderson about the petition. Anderson's goal is to work on preserving areas while also repurposing without losing the overall integrity. She said the charm of Plaza Midwood is a necessity and the City of Charlotte has not done a great job at preserving it.

WCNC Charlotte will continue to follow updates about this potential project.
