CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte firefighters identified the cause of a 2-alarm fire that left two residents and one firefighter in the hospital on Saturday night, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.
On Monday, the department said the fire was caused by an unattended lit candle in the back window sill of the dining area.
The fire broke out just after 11 p.m. on the 4500 block of Wynbrook Way. Two residents were rescued from a smoke-filled apartment and sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.
Light smoke was coming from a single unit in the apartment building when firefighters arrived. The other units in the building were not impacted.
One firefighter was also taken to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Crews controlled the fire in about 30 minutes.
Fire officials say the damages amounted to about $50,000.
