CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina Charlotte is investigating claims of hazing within its baseball teams. But on campus, there's no shock. Students there say hazing's a fact of college life.
We're still working to learn more about claims that UNCC baseball players were hazing teammates. NBC Charlotte's Allie Spillyards spent the day on campus – and Allie, you say there's not a lot of surprise?
Freshman Naida Pass said she and a friend saw the news of allegations against the baseball team last night.
"Why would you do that? It's really stupid," said Pass.
But students on campus weren't shocked.
"I think it's more of a traditional thing that it's always happened that way so there's just no question about it," said sophomore Bjorn Irizarri.
Of course, University officials are taking the matter seriously. They told us in a statement, "University policy clearly prohibits hazing and states that "it is the responsibility of all students, staff, faculty and members of the University community to ensure an atmosphere of learning, social responsibility, and respect for human dignity."
And while officials investigate, the only puzzling part of this story for students is the group accused.
"Usually when I hear hazing, I think sororities, fraternities. But I think it's kind of unusual that it's the baseball team or any athletic program," said freshman Chris Davis.
In fact, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity was suspended on campus last September for hazing a pledge.
But while hazing's no unheard of at UNCC, it's an issue both faculty and students would like to see left behind.
"It causes more problems than good. It just doesn't cause any good at all," said Pass.
