CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte is doing away with free on-street parking most nights in the city.
Starting Sept. 3, drivers will need to pay to park on Charlotte streets until 10 p.m. Under previous regulations, parking was free after 6 p.m.
The parking fees will be in effect Monday through Saturday. Parking rates at on-street meters and city-owned pay stations are $1.50 per hour.
The new regulations do not impact privately-owned parking locations.
On-street spaces allow a maximum of two hours of parking
"On-street, metered parking is limited to two hours to promote turnover and support businesses in Uptown and South End," the city of Charlotte said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte. "Parkers in Uptown and South End who will be parked longer than two hours are encouraged to use off-street parking like parking lots and decks as on-street parking is for temporary use and not long-term use. The city implemented available technology to enforce the existing on-street, metered parking signage."
Signage explaining the new hours is expected to be installed throughout the month of August, according to the city.
