Street parking in parts of Charlotte will change soon. Here's what you need to know

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Changes are coming to the way people park on Charlotte city streets.

The city is extending the hours for paid street parking.

Right now, parking on city streets is free after 6 p.m. Once the change goes into effect, people will have to pay until 10 p.m.

City leaders hope this will lead to more turnover between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., to encourage more people to visit businesses, since parking spots could become available more frequently.

The Strategic Parking Plan is a part of the 2025 budget, and specifically targets the Uptown and South End neighborhoods. As part of the plan, the on-street parking system in those areas is expected to expand to roughly 1,200 managed parking spaces.

It's not yet clear when that change goes into effect, but when city officials do decide on a start date, a notice will be sent online and through the ParkMobile app
