SHELBY, N.C -- Hundreds of people gathered at the vigil Monday night for Officer Tim Brackeen, who died Monday morning after being shot in the line of duty.
Amazing Grace was tightly packed, filled with people dressed in blue to show support for the department. The crowd applauded for Shelby Police and their families at the start of the prayer vigil.
"Today, Tim Brackeen went home, we lost a hero, brother, father, friend."
The community honored the officer and prayed for the officers who continue to protect and serve despite these painful circumstances.
"No part of the world is immune from evil."
Officers, civilians, children and pastors all broke off in groups and prayed together.
The memorial at the police headquarters continued to grow throughout the night. Many people visited the officer's car with flowers, balloons and condolences for the family prior to the vigil.
