Historic Latta Place discussed at Mecklenburg County commissioner meeting

After the site was nearly used for a Confederate soldier reenactment in 2021, county officials did not renew a contract with the site’s directors.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — At a county commissioner meeting Tuesday night, Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation were expected to give an update on the multi-phase plan to revisit and reimagine Latta Place.

It’s a plantation site in the northern part of the county that’s been used for public education.

"This reimagined Latta Place will have that balance of being a place that is reflective of those harmful events, but also celebratory," community engagement expert, Christine Edwards, said earlier this year at a Latta Place listening session.

After the site was nearly used for a Confederate soldier reenactment in 2021, county officials did not renew a contract with the site’s directors.

This left Latta Place open to becoming something new.

"One thing that’s going to be different is that we’re going to have a more hands-on approach to this," W. Lee Jones, the Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation Director, said.

Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation took over the reins and began Phase 1: Collecting information about Latta Place and other historic sites to understand the scope of the new project.

Phase 2 began last spring by coming up with a master plan for how visitors will connect with the site and its rich history.

This summer was the start of Phase 3: Mecklenburg County is now moving to implement the plan for the site.

Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation was expected to lay out what it's done so far during Tuesday night's meeting, as well as share what’s left in Phase 3, like hiring a Historic Site Manager this November and beginning design and construction next spring before a 2026 reopening.
