WAXHAW, N.C. — Union County Pride held a Family Fun event in Waxhaw on Saturday. It was billed as a kid-friendly event anyone could enjoy.
But not everyone greeted it with open arms.
Protesters gathered around and even inside the event at the Water Tower Community Corner, with some people who attended the festival feeling stressed and uncomfortable. Cristal Robinson, the president of Union County Pride, said their goal was to provide an inclusive space that is friendly for all ages.
“I just want to have an organization that is out there in the community doing things and showing that you can grow old and be queer," Robinson said.
Protesters gathered around and inside the fenced area where the event was held. Many held signs expressing their disagreement with the event happening.
Police were present to make sure things never escalated but did not separate protesters from the event. Earlier in the week on social media, Union County Pride said the group had met with police and town leaders and that officers would not keep protestors out of the event space. The group asked people who wanted to attend not to engage protestors and to assess if they wanted to show up.
Still, Robinson said their mission remains.
"Coming out doing events and saying, 'hey, there are other queer people here," they said.
Union County Pride is set to host a Teen Party in Indian Trail on September 28 at the town hall from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. They will partner with Time Out Youth and Charlotte Gaymers Network.
