WAXHAW, N.C. — Gregory Sharpe has been let go from his role as the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Chief.
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the Town of Waxhaw released a statement acknowledging a notice sent to officials from the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department's Board of Directors that they have fired Sharpe, effective immediately, and appointed Kevin Rigoli as the interim Fire Chief.
Rigoli previously served as the Union County Fire Marshall.
The Waxhaw Community Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad shared the following statement with WCNC Charlotte:
"On January 30th, 2024 the Board of Directors of the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department decided to redirect the strategic vision of the Fire Department. To be successful the Board of Directors felt this could only be accomplished with a change in the top leadership of the organization. The decision was made to terminate Fire Chief Greg Sharpe, as in consistent with the governing by-laws of the organization, and appoint an Interim Fire Chief. We want to stress the decision was based on the desire for change in the strategic vision of the Fire Department. There were no criminal or ethical violations in this decision to part ways. On the evening of January 30, 2024, as is consistent with the governing by-laws of the organization, the fire department Board of Directors appointed Kevin Rigoli as the Interim Fire Chief while they search for qualified applicants to participate in an established process for the position of Fire Chief. The membership of Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department is grateful for the dedication, commitment, and effort Chief Sharpe demonstrated to the community we serve as well as the organization we belong to. During this transition, the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department will continue to provide the highest level of service that the residents and visitors to our community expect from our organization."
Anyone with questions about the board's decision in this matter can reach out to Robert Kennedy, the President of the Board of Directors for the Waxhaw Community Volunteer Fire Department at 516-672-9632 or email him at rkennedy@waxhawvfd.org.
