Weddington leaders approve plans for new homes in the area

However, it's getting resistance from neighbors, with many of them taking those concerns directly to the decision-makers.

WEDDINGTON, N.C. — The Charlotte metro area continues to grow, and that includes more people moving to cities and towns near the Queen City. But as these places continue to welcome new neighbors, they're also facing questions about where and when to add new residential subdivisions.

A proposal on whether or not to bring a 62-lot conventional residential subdivision to an area near the 600 block of Weddington Road in the town of Weddington is coming with some pushback.

As Weddington leaders gathered to discuss the plans Wednesday night, neighbors also chimed in on the conversation. Many of them showed up to encourage town leaders to say "no deal".

"We don’t have the infrastructure, it makes no sense," said one attendee.

"This is strictly a money grab," said another resident.

Along with congestion, others shared concerns about incomplete stormwater and septic plans.

"Our town requires Union County septic approval and they don’t have that at this point," said a neighbor.

"We are pro-development but you must first have the roads, soil, and water," said another.

Project leaders highlighted some of the changes made to accommodate concerns including decreasing the number of units from 93 to 62 and eliminating a shared septic system, opting instead for installing a septic system on the lot.

Town leaders later recommended the proposal for approval with some conditions, moving the project one step forward.
