Woman arrested after shooting gun in Walmart parking lot, investigators say

The woman was shot by an officer responding to a crash outside the Walmart on East Franklin Boulevard. Police said she was shooting a gun.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A woman who allegedly shot at a man trying to help her after a crash outside a Gastonia Walmart was shot by police, officials said. She is now in jail.

The woman, 31-year-old Tane’z S. Sanders, was arrested on Sunday after spending some time in the hospital. She was booked into the Gaston County jail.

The crash happened earlier in May in the parking lot of the Walmart on East Franklin Boulevard. A man stopped to help Sanders when she got out of the car and started shooting, according to Gastonia Police. The responding officer shot her one time.

Two witnesses said they saw the woman shooting as they pulled into the parking lot. They told WCNC Charlotte's Richard DeVayne they believed a man was trying to help her until they heard gunshots. The witnesses said they saw several children in her car as she fired randomly in the parking lot.

Sanders had three children inside the car, according to police. Her injuries weren't considered life-threatening. One of the kids was taken to the hospital as a precaution due to respiratory issues not related to the shooting, police said.

Sanders is charged with five felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and 1 misdemeanor count of armed terror to the public. These charges stem from the incident that took place in the parking lot of Franklin Square located at 3000 East Franklin Blvd. During the incident, a Gastonia police officer shot and wounded the suspect.

"We drove by right as she pulled up," one of the witnesses said. "We thought he was helping her because he was outside her car. There were three gunshots and I heard somebody scream and she let out like eight or 10 more shots."

The officer who shot Sanders hasn't been identified.
