YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff's Office suspended a search for a woman and children who may have jumped into the Catawba River to avoid an oncoming train.
Officials searched the area around SC Highway 5's bridge near the Catawba River at the York-Lancaster county line.
A train conductor told deputies they saw a woman and two children walking on a train trestle crossing the Catawba River. As the train approached the trestle, they started running. The train conductor did not see the people as he crossed the area.
Deputies say the three people either jumped into the river, were hit by the train, or escaped into the woods. Investigators say there is no visible sign of people being hit by the train.
Investigators are hoping that if the woman and children did escape they reach out to authorities to say they are alright.
