Woman and children possibly jumped into Catawba River to avoid train, officials say

The search is taking place near SC Highway 5 near the York-Lancaster county line.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff's Office is searching for a woman and children who may have been hit by a train or jumped into the Catawba River.

Officials say the search is taking place on SC Highway 5, also known as Rock Hill Highway, near the York-Lancaster county line.

A train conductor told deputies they saw a woman and two children walking on a train trestle crossing the Catawba River. As the train approached the trestle, they started running. The train conductor did not see the people as he crossed the area.

Deputies say the three people either jumped into the river, were hit by the train, or escaped into the woods. Investigators say there is no visible sign of people being hit by the train.

Investigators are hoping that if the woman and children did escape they reach out to authorities to say they are alright.

No further information is available at this time. Anyone with information on this is asked to contact the York County Sheriff's Office at (803) 628-3059.
