York County residents see $411M transportation referendum on ballot

Officials say that money will go into transportation projects all throughout the county if approved.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — York County residents are looking at their highest road referendum this election season, with a price tag sitting at $411 million.

Officials say that money will go into transportation projects all throughout the county.

“It’s the largest referendum that we’ve ever had. That’s what we project the tax will collect over that 7-year period,” Patrick Hamilton, the Assistant County Engineer explained.

That money, If approved, will go into projects across the county to widen roads and tackle overall transportation needs for the next seven years - a concept the county has seen before, just never at a cost this high.

“There are many projects throughout the county that could use the funding. The difficult job for the commission who picks is to narrow that list down. But there are always projects that are needed and there’s always a lack of funding,” Hamilton explained.

He said in this referendum, the county is taking into consideration the requests of residents allocating $ 80 million of the $ 411 million to paving roads.

“Those are good projects because you don’t have to design them, you don’t have to buy right of way, relocate utility or power polls. You can get started a lot sooner," Hamilton noted.

If approved, this tax will be in place until 2031.
