K-9 Fred helped deputies capture 250 suspects and helped the agency locate numerous missing people, investigators said. During his 10-year career, Fred responded to more than 500 calls in the York County area.

"Fred's legacy of bravery and service will continue to inspire and remind us of the vital role that our K-9 units play in ensuring the safety and protection of York County," Sheriff Kevin Tolson said in a news release.

Fred served alongside Sgt. Chris Kinsey, the supervisor of York County's K-9 unit.
