'No way': Union County man wins second huge lottery prize

Most people only dream of winning the lottery. A Union County man did it for the second time.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A Monroe man did something for the second time that most people only dream of doing once: He won a huge lottery jackpot.

Alexander Acevedo won big playing several years ago and decided to try his luck again this week. He purchased a $30 Black Titanium scratch-off from a Food Lion in Monroe. What happened next took his breath away.

"I couldn't believe it," he said. "I was like, 'No way.' It feels great."

His ticket was worth $100,000. In September 2021, he pocketed a $200,000 prize through a different scratch-off game with the North Carolina Education Lottery.

"After I won, I told my mother-in-law, 'Guess what? I did it again.'"

After required state and federal taxes, Acevedo took home $71,509. Last time he won, Acevedo took his daughters to Disney World. He's not sure how he plans to use the money this time, but a return trip to the "happiest place on earth" isn't out of the question.

"That last trip was fun," he said. "Maybe we'll do it again."

The Black Titanium game debuted last June with six $4 million top prizes and 16 $100,000 prizes. Four of the top prizes and seven $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed, lottery officials said.
