CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crazy outburst at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was caught on camera Friday.
The video showed a man causing a commotion at one of the gates. The situation led to Felix Alberto Brandi-Rivera being arrested for disorderly conduct.
However, some are questioning why it took so long for security to step in.
Kerrie Carter, who recorded the video, said the incident went on for about 5 minutes before she even started recording. She said a lot of people at the gate were scared for their safety, and everyone was wondering why it took police so long to respond.
In the video, alarms are blaring as the man screams, knocks over signs, and even removes his shirt and puts his hands on an American Airlines worker.
It happened around 11:45 a.m. at the airport. Many people who saw the video wondering where police were.
"I would think they would've been there much faster, considering everything that happens in airports,” said one man.
The video went on for 3 minutes and 18 seconds before police showed up and Brandi-Rivera was restrained.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said their response time was 2 minutes in this case. They said sometimes there can be a slight delay in dispatching airport officers, because people aren't calling 911 directly and airport communications have to redirect them. Plus, the officers are on foot.
"They need to be [faster]. That could've escalated into something worse,” said a man flying out Charlotte Douglas.
A representative for American Airlines said Brandi-Rivera wasn't even getting on the plane at that gate. His gate for a flight to San Juan was further down.
Brandi-River ended up missing that flight during this incident. The airline spokesperson said the gate workers responded how they were trained to in this type of situation.
