Man charged with murder of missing pregnant woman and her unborn child, police say

Sasha Lee Naylor was last seen in August and was due to give birth this month.

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — Police have charged a man with the murder of a missing pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The Stanly County Sheriffs Office confirmed with NBC Charlotte they have arrested and charged 30- year-old Joseph Rhodes with one count of first degree murder and one count of first degree murder of an unborn child.

A Silver Alert was issued for Naylor on February 21 in Stanly County, though she was last seen alive at a home on Kates Drive in Albemarle in August 2018. Her due date was early February, according to the Stanly County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities are moving forward with charges – even though Naylor’s remains were never found.

Sources say a witness came forward with information about when Naylor was last seen. Around that time the sheriffs office learned her car was completely found burned in the Marshville area on August 28, four days after she was last seen.

The unrecognized vehicle was towed and sold for scraps on January 8.

The investigation led sources to confirm with NBC Charlotte that Rhodes -- already in custody for drug related charges -- is now also facing two counts of first degree murder.

Sources also say Rhodes was the boyfriend to Naylor and the father of her unborn child.

"In my 27 years I've never seen, I've never been involved in an investigation like this, not in this county," said Sheriff Jeff Crisco with the Stanly County Sheriff's Office.

No remains have been found, but the Sheriff's office told NBC Charlotte they will not stop looking. They are asking anyone with information on a vehicle fire the night of August 27 in the Marshville area to reach out to the Sheriffs office at 704-986-3690.
