PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. — For the second time in as many days, a man drowned Sunday after he was apparently caught in a strong rip current off of Memorial Park beach in Carteret County, authorities said.

Three children were rescued from the water by bystanders and law enforcement officials, according to officials.

Authorities declined to identify the man who died, based on a request from his relatives, Pine Knoll Shores officials said in a written statement.

"The Town of Pine Knoll Shores extends its sympathy to the family and thanks the towns of Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach for their assistance," said Julie Anderson, assistant town manager, said in the statement.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m.

The man was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water by lifeguards on duty

The young children were rushed for treatment to Carteret Healthcare, where they were listed Sunday in good condition, officials said.

According to Anderson, the Town had red flags posted all day Sunday that indicated a high rip current risk.
