Myers Park students upset after homecoming dance sells out

Officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said this year the homecoming dance was moved to a larger gym on campus to accommodate more students, but it still sold out.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Homecoming for students at Myers Park High School is this weekend, but some parents are upset after the dance sold out.

Myers Park has more than 3,000 students but only sold 1,000 tickets to the dance.

“I go to purchase the tickets and they’re sold out. That’s when I panicked, I was like, 'What do you mean they’re sold out?'” said busy mom Rebecca Thomason.

Officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said this year the homecoming dance was moved to a larger gym on campus to accommodate more students, but it still sold out.

“I feel sad for them, but to be honest it’s a good life lesson,” said Thomason, who admitted she procrastinated buying the tickets and didn't realize they would sell out.

Thomason hoped the incident will teach her children not to wait until the last minute if there’s something they really want to do. Still, Thomason reached out to other moms in case there was a student who might not be able to go after all.

“Things come up, so maybe if they weren’t able to attend they could transfer to another student,” she said.

However, Thomason was shocked to learn the school would not allow students to transfer tickets to the dance.

“I would like it if the school would at least have some sort of exchange,” she said.

Myers Park faces a dilemma similar to other large schools across our area. School officials said holding dances on campus keeps costs down so students can afford to go. Holding dances off campus accommodates more students, but it drives up the cost.

In the past, other large schools only sold dance tickets to upper-classmen which enabled the schools to accommodate everyone in 11th and 12th grades plus their dates.
