5 things you need to know Monday

Obama's immigration plan goes to court

Obama's immigration plan goes to court

President Obama’s lawyers will head to the Supreme Court on Monday to defend the president's controversial plan to block the deportation of more than 4 million undocumented immigrants. The shorthanded eight justices agreed in January to hear the appeal to a challenge brought by Texas and 25 other states that successfully put a stop to the program in lower courts. A decision reversing the appeals court ruling would give the government more than six months to begin implementing the policy. But Obama’s opponents point out that Congress is responsible for crafting the nation’s immigration enforcement laws. A decision is not expected until June.

It's Tax Day. We're sorry.

This year, Tax Day was made only slightly worse by landing on a Monday. Financial procrastinators had an extra weekend to file their taxes, and New Englanders can thank Patriot's Day for extending the deadline until Tuesday. If you haven't filed your taxes yet, you have until tomorrow to file for an extension. If you have filed, congratulations. Here are a few changes that could affect returns this year, including a rise in tax brackets, personal exemptions and the earned income credit.

Bidders line up for Yahoo

The Yahoo fire sale should reach a turning point this week. Any company with an interest in buying all or part of the troubled Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Net company is expected to have its bids in Monday. Dozens of companies are said to be interested in Yahoo — some published reports suggest as many as 40 — including Verizon Communications (VZ). The telecommunications giant expressed interest in Yahoo's Internet business two months before CEO Marissa Mayer and Chairman Maynard Webb made it official that the company would entertain offers for its core business including Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance and Tumblr.

It's Marathon Monday in Boston

Participants and spectators at this year's Boston Marathon on Monday will notice a large volume of uniformed police officers once again lining the 26.2-mile route. Three years after bombings rocked the finish line of the race, security remains greatly enhanced, said David Procopio, a spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police. The course always had a large security presence, but officials increased it exponentially after two homemade pressure-cooker bombs killed three people and injured more than 260 in 2013.
