Charlotte synagogue raises money for Israel-Hamas war victims

The funds will be used to help contribute 10 EMS medical supply kits for ambulances.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the war between Israel and Hamas continues in Gaza, families there are facing destruction and uncertainty.

"The  Jewish community is both very sad and very scared right now," Rabbi Michael Wolk with Temple Israel of Charlotte said. "When something like this happens, antisemitic attacks spread to other countries as well."

Wolk said it’s a pain that can be felt miles and miles away, and now more relief is in the works for Gaza as the violent attack continues.

Last week, 20 trucks of aid came into Gaza from Egypt and now the Temple Israel of Charlotte is stepping in to help, too. They're contributing to first responders who are on the ground in Israel.

"Thousands of missiles were launched from the Gaza strip, and terrorists invaded Israeli towns all around the Gaza strip, murdering people as young as babies to senior citizens," Wolk said.

He said because there were so many attacks and many wounded, the first responders are overwhelmed and need support right now.

Wolk said they’re raising funds to contribute 10 EMS medical supply kits for ambulances. They have already passed their initial goal of $54,000, raising more than $69,000. Wolk said the funds allows them to stock up on variety of medical supplies from bandages to oxygen masks.

"It makes a big difference," Wolk said. "This affects us all, even though it's far away."

Wolk said great things happen when people come together, and he is hoping the Charlotte community will continue to show love and support to families praying for peace.

"It's time to turn to God for support and to turn to each other for support," Wolk said. "Community is one of the greatest gifts of our faith."
