Presidential election results from across the US

President-elect Joe Biden has defeated President Donald Trump, 306-232, according to the Associated Press.

WASHINGTON — Sixteen days after the Nov. 3 presidential election between President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden, the electoral map is now complete. Biden has won the 2020 election, 306-232, according to the Associated Press.

Four years ago, President Donald Trump breached the Democrats’ “blue wall,” narrowly winning Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin — a trio of Great Lakes states that had long served as a bulwark against Republican presidential candidates.

Biden captured it back and flipped two traditionally Republican states -- Arizona and Georgia -- to blue.

The Associated Press called the election for Biden on Nov. 7 after winning Pennsylvania. He completed his total by winning Georgia on Nov. 19 following a hand tally in the state.

Election Day in the United States unfolded like no other, with nearly 100 million Americans having already cast their ballots before polls even opened on Tuesday.

In order to win the U.S. presidential election, a candidate must win in enough states to have 270 Electoral College votes.

Which states have the most electoral college votes?

California, the most populous state, has 53 representatives in the House. Combine that with the state's two senators, and it has 55 electoral votes.

Texas has the second-most with 38 electoral votes. After that, New York and Florida are tied with 29 votes each. Then, it goes to Illinois and Pennsylvania with 20 each.

A simple majority of electoral votes is needed to win: 270. Ultimately, what happens with the popular vote doesn't matter in deciding who becomes president of the United States.
