MAIDEN, N.C. -- A new kind of skimmer was found at a convenience store in Maiden this week.
Police are looking for a man who's suspected of installing the device inside a gas pump at Kangaroo Express on 1200 E. Main Street. Authorities believe the skimmer was active from March 17 through March 26.
Customers couldn’t believe something like this could happen in Maiden.
“Not this little town, nope. But they’re happening everywhere! Popping up all over the place,” said one man.
Some seven miles up the road in nearby Newton, police also discovered a skimmer and camera on an ATM. Other skimmers have been reported in Gastonia, Charlotte and Rock Hill. In fact, more than 650 skimmers were found in North Carolina in 2017; that's more than double the number found in 2016.
Police said the thief in Maiden used Bluetooth to access the debit cards and then make unauthorized purchases. If you have any information about the suspect, call 828-428-5005.
