BELMONT, N.C. — Belmont Police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed on a highway just before the Gaston-Mecklenburg county line late Saturday night.

Police responded to a pedestrian struck just before midnight Saturday on Interstate 85 northbound before Catawba River Bridge.

Officers said 28-year-old Marky Vongphakdy was walking in the center lane of the highway, wearing dark clothing when he was hit by multiple vehicles.

Witnesses said they could not see Vongphakdy until he had been hit. He was pronounced dead, officers said.

The road was shut down for a short period, before reopening to one lane.

The Belmont Police Department was assisted by the Gastonia Police Department and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
