Police: Credit union security guard fires shots at armed robber

UNC Charlotte sent out an alert late Monday morning stating a person had robbed the Credit Union located on University City Blvd.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UNC Charlotte sent out an alert late Monday morning stating a person had attempted to rob the State Employee's Credit Union located on University City Blvd.

According to police, a masked man walked into the credit union, and that's when a security guard ordered him to take off his mask.

The suspect refused and cocked his gun. Police said the security guard fired several shots at the robber, and the masked man fled.

We spoke to a man who was waiting outside the branch for his wife who was inside the bank when it happened.

"She told me somebody came in with a mask on into the bank and security guard asked him to remove it and he just started shooting off rounds, about six or seven rounds," he said.

Reports stated the suspect was last seen in a green Honda Civic leaving the area on W. T. Harris at a high rate of speed possibly headed towards I-85.

An updated NinerAlert stated officials did not believe there was a threat to the UNC Charlotte Campus based on facts available. The school was not placed on lockdown.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact UNC Charlotte Police or CMPD.
