CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Enough South Carolinians aren't getting their new REAL ID and it's going to be a problem, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
So far, 560,000 people have gotten the new identification but there are still at least 2 million people who need them.
DMV chief Kevin Shwedo said they're expecting six-hour lines because too many folks haven't gotten theirs yet. The new driver's license and identification card isn't needed until October 1, 2020, but it's probably a good idea to go ahead and get yours before the last minute.
If you plan on flying or entering a federal building that requires an ID (not a post office) or military base, you will need their REAL ID by October 1, 2020. That goes for residents in both Carolinas, by the way.
Appearance wise, the only difference between your current ID and a REAL ID is a gold star in the upper right corner. In South Carolina, the new ID costs $25. In North Carolina, you can expect to pay $13.
The best way to avoid those long lines is to be prepared when you go to the DMV. To obtain your REAL ID, you'll need to bring proof of your identity and birth date, as well as proof of legal or lawful presence in the United States, your social security card and two documents that prove your current address and residency, such as a power bill and banking documents.
