CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolinians will head to the polls Tuesday to vote in the 2024 North Carolina primary election with voters casting ballots in several key elections, including U.S. president, U.S. House of Representatives, governor and attorney general.
So far, more than 690,000 people voted early or by mail, according to North Carolina elections officials.
Before you head to your polling place, it's important to know what you need to vote in the North Carolina primary election. Voters affiliated with any political party may vote the ballot of candidates for their party only. For unaffiliated voters, you may choose to vote on any one party's ballot or a nonpartisan ballot, if available. A voter cannot vote in more than one party's primary.
What do I need to do before voting in North Carolina?
ID is required. Karen Brinson Bell with the North Carolina State Board of Elections said most voters will show their driver's license but there are other forms of acceptable ID.
Those other forms include a passport, a college or university ID approved by the Board of Elections, and even a military ID. You can find a full list here.
There are over 200 polling places open in North Carolina, but that doesn't mean you can go anywhere and vote. You must go to your assigned polling place on Election Day, according to Bell.
And finally, there's absentee ballots or voting by mail. Many people chose to send in an absentee ballot so they could vote early and avoid polls on Election Day. However, if you forgot to mail it, don't worry about it because it likely won't make it in time when the polls close on Super Tuesday.
Instead, Bell says you'll need to drop it off in person before the polls close. Otherwise, it won't count.
"You can drop it off at the county Board of Elections office or tomorrow (Tuesday) before 7:30 p.m.," Bell explained.
