KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A few Kamala Harris/Tim Walz campaign signs were cut and removed near the Kannapolis train station Thursday.
A WCNC Charlotte viewer contacted the station and sent photos of the damaged campaign signs Friday morning. The photos show the Harris/Walz signs obviously slashed. The viewer told WCNC Charlotte "there are reports of Trump supporters harassing non-Trump voters and an assault to a Democratic poll worker has occurred."
WCNC Charlotte contacted the Kannapolis Police Department to see what it knew about these allegations. The city of Kannapolis responded with the following information:
The Kannapolis Police Department received a call at 3:35 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024, regarding an incident between two individuals at 201 S. Main Street. When officers arrived, they found the individuals had left the area and were nearby. The gentlemen reported that they had a brief exchange and one of the men knocked the other person’s cellphone out of their hand. Neither of the gentlemen were election poll workers or employees.
Officers advised the gentleman who had the phone knocked out of his hand that he could file a misdemeanor charge for the incident of the phone being removed from his hand. The person involved did not file any further paperwork.
The police department has received a call related to campaign signs in which the person asked for an increased police presence due to someone messing with campaign signs. No reference was made regarding damage, or the signs being moved and does not warrant any police action. While on routine patrol this morning, officers discovered several campaign signs damaged and knocked down near 201 S. Main St.
While the signs are damaged near the train station, WCNC Charlotte has verified the rumors of a poll worker being assaulted and the alleged harassments are not substantiated. It is unknown at this time who vandalized the Harris/Walz campaign signs.
