KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — With early voting officially underway throughout the Carolinas, election officials are monitoring for any issues or rumors.
One video circulating on social media hints at voting machine issues at a polling place in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
To verify the truth, WCNC Charlotte spoke directly to Carol Soles from the Cabarrus County Board of Elections. Soles verified there was an issue with just one of the machines at the polling place located within the train station on South Main Street. The hiccup did not impact any votes cast.
"This is our Super Bowl," she said. "We plan backups on backups."
In this particular issue, Soles said voters placed ballots in a secure area. Once the tabulator was fixed, the votes were cast.
"The chief judge here at the train station got a judge from the opposite party," Soles said. "They announced to everyone there that they would be opening the emergency bin and putting all those ballots into the tabulator, since it was now fixed."
Several voters learned of the situation because of a video on TikTok.
“I am a little concerned with that, but I'm just, you know, trusting that it's going to be counted," Corey Ewert, who voted early in Kannapolis, told WCNC Charlotte on Tuesday.
The issue was fixed the same day. Soles stressed that impacted ballots remained secure and did not leave the building during the outage.
WCNC Charlotte will have live election coverage of all the local and statewide elections starting at 7 p.m. on Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5 on streaming on WCNC+, and all election results can be found by texting the word ELECTION to 704-329-3600 or going to WCNC Charlotte's election page.
