MARVIN, N.C. — Voters in Union County's Marvin community soundly rejected a pair of bond referendums that would've allocated millions of dollars toward transportation projects and a new park.
The transportation bond failed 1,489 to 417. It would have put $15 million toward adding new greenways and improving sidewalks and roads across Marvin. The money would've come from increasing property taxes beginning in 2026. The estimated property tax increase for the transportation bond would've been 4.75 cents per $100 property value beginning July 1, 2025.
The parks and recreation bond failed 1,550 to 355. The bond would have put $5 million toward a new park with several amenities. This bond also would've taken money from increased property taxes to cover the cost of the project.
An example on the bond referendum's website says if both were passed, someone who owns a home valued at $750,000 would have a new tax bill of $1,050, increasing their annual tax bill by $600 in 2025. That same person's annual tax bill would've increased another $206.25 in 2028.
With both bond referendums failing, it's unclear what will happen next. Some projects may be canceled, but those deemed critical could be funded through other means, including property tax increases.
