Chris Carney wins Mooresville mayoral election in landslide

Former North Carolina Sen. Chris Carney defeated Bobby Compton in a landslide to become Mooresville's next mayor.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The town of Mooresville will soon have a new mayor as Chris Carney easily defeated Bobby Compton with nearly 70% of the vote in Tuesday's election.

Mooresville residents already knew major changes were coming with several leaders not seeking reelection, including incumbent Mayor Miles Atkins, who told WCNC Charlotte in September that he's eyeing opportunities to serve in 2024 but hasn't said in what capacity. In addition to a new mayor, Mooresville will have a new town manager, planning director and commissioners.

Carney is a former state senator and Mooresville town commissioner. He had endorsements from North Carolina Reps. Jeffery McNeely and Jason Saine.

Compton, an at-large commissioner, risked his position on the board to run for mayor. Compton told WCNC Charlotte that the turnover within the town's government wasn't cause for concern. Compton's commissioner seat was won by Eddie Karriker, who defeated Frank Owens in Tuesday's election.

Ultimately the race between Carney and Compton might've come down to fruits and vegetables. Namely, the beloved Josh's Farmers Market, which has come under scrutiny from the town's leadership. Carney voiced a position that said the town shouldn't be focused on the market, instead turning its attention to bigger issues. Compton, meanwhile, said Josh's was just one of hundreds of businesses and shouldn't get preferential treatment.

Josh's Farmers Market has struggled to find where it fits under Mooresville's new UDO, which forced the market to operate as retail. Owner Josh Graham said he's been operating under "seasonal sales" and has been forced to change locations every few months.

The market, currently located at the corner of River Highway and Bluefield Road, hopes to have a permanent location sometime next year. Graham's story has been closely followed by residents since the Mooresville Scoop shined a spotlight on his battle with town leaders.

Graham celebrated Tuesday's election results, thanking the community for its support.

"We have change y'all, and in a big time way!" Graham posted on Facebook. "Y'all folks shows up and made your voices heard, despite many being turned away at multiple voting locations that didn't live inside City limits!"
