CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Republican Jonathan Almond flipped North Carolina's 73rd House District red by defeating Democrat incumbent Diamond Staton-Williams in the 2024 general election.
With 100% of precincts reporting, Almond leads Staton-Williams by nearly 8%. The margin between each candidate is nearly 3,000 votes.
The district covers the northeast part of Cabarrus County, including portions of Concord and Kannapolis. The district’s jurisdiction has changed many times since it was created in 1993. Its current form took effect in 2023.
Diamond Staton-Williams
Staton-Williams won election to the 73rd District seat in the 2022 election. She was the first Democrat to be elected to the 73rd District by beating her Republican challenger by fewer than 700 votes.
While in the NC House, Staton-Williams has sponsored bills appropriating funds to address the teacher crisis, vet care for retired law enforcement canines, predatory towing fees and practices prevention, and empowering small and socially disadvantaged farmers, among others.
Staton-Williams supports fully funding public schools, accessible health care, and investing in small businesses.
Staton-Williams is a former nurse and a town council member of Harrisburg.
Jonathan Almond
Republican challenger Jonathan Almond hopes to flip the seat back to the GOP in November. Almond narrowly beat Holly Edwards in the Republican Primary for the nomination.
Almond is the controller of a management group that operates a barbecue franchise, according to his campaign website. He’s been endorsed by several Republican organizations and Republican NC legislators.
He is against government overreach, limitations on the Second Amendment, and mandatory vaccinations while supporting lower taxes, term limits and a pro-life stance on abortion.
