RALEIGH, N.C. — Two members of the U.S. House representing North Carolina are facing off in the race to be North Carolina's attorney general.
Dan Bishop
Republican Dan Bishop currently represents North Carolina's 8th Congressional District.
The North Carolina native received a degree in business administration as well as a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and had been a commercial litigator for almost 30 years, according to his campaign. Bishop has served on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, the North Carolina House of Representatives for District 104, the North Carolina State Senate for District 39, and U.S. House North Carolina District 9.
In 2016, Bishop sponsored House Bill 2, also known as the "bathroom bill," which banned local municipalities from enacting non-discriminatory ordinances designed to protect members of the LGBTQ+ community. HB2 was repealed in 2017.
Jeff Jackson
Democrat Jeff Jackson currently represents North Carolina's 14th Congressional District.
Jackson has served in the military for over 20 years. He served in Afghanistan after training at Ft. Bragg, and more recently has served in the Army National Guard. Following his deployment, Jackson attended UNC-Chapel Hill for law school, using GI Bill benefits.
Prior to being elected to represent the 14th Congressional District, Jackson had served as an assistant district attorney in Gaston County, and North Carolina State Senator representing Mecklenburg County. Jackson's campaign notes that, during his time in the General Assembly, one of his early commitments was to repeal HB2.
