What to know before you vote in South Carolina primary runoffs

Here's what you need to know before you head out to vote in the South Carolina Primary Runoffon June 25, 2024.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tuesday is Primary Election Day Runoff Day in South Carolina, as voters across the state settle for good who will be the party representative in November's general election.

Polls open statewide beginning at 7 a.m. and will be open until 7 p.m. Anyone standing in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

The runoffs are a follow up to the June 11 primary, when races for the Republican or Democratic nominations for key offices statewide were held. However, in a number of those contests where there were two or more candidates, no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote. That means those races had to go to a runoff between the top two vote getters.

Two big things to point out before you go. First, it's important to note before you go out: depending on where you live, or your party affiliation, you may have no race to vote for. In many counties, the primary on June 11 settled who would be the ballot, and no runoff was necessary. And second, remember, if you voted for one party in the June 11 primary, you have to stick with that choice. You can switch which party to vote for between the primary and the runoff.

Finally, while technically this is just to choose the Democratic or Republican primary winner, in some cases, people are making their final decision in races. That's because in some contests, no member of the opposite party filed for November's election, meaning whoever wins Tuesday is the winner of that office.
