Waxhaw preparing for municipal elections and how they can impact town

Waxhaw's last municipal election was decided by thin margins

WAXHAW, N.C. — Polls for Union County's fall municipal elections open just around a week from now.

Waxhaw will see voters decide on three key seats for town leaders; the town’s mayor and two commissioners.

Fall municipal elections usually do not pull large crowds but Waxhaw commissioner Brenda McMillon says this election is a big one.

"This is an extremely important election, we have two opposing views as to how the town should move forward, and how the town should run,” said McMillon.

McMillon has been in her position for the town for more than five years and says her goal for Waxhaw is to be transparent with the community, especially as the town is dealing with ongoing growth.

“It's important that we listen to our residents. But it's also important that the residents do understand that there are statutes and ordinances and regulations that we as commissioners have to follow," said McMillon. "In doing so we're trying to follow all of the guidelines that we are that are put in place for the town, without the town being liable. Because if we do not follow that, then there's a liability issue that comes to the town."

Waxhaw’s last municipal election in 2019 was decided by thin margins. The town’s commissioner seats were decided by fewer than 60 votes. The mayoral race was decided by fewer than 10.

As Waxhaw continues to see more growth and development, town leaders like McMillon are hopeful to see involvement at the polls.

“Waxhaw needs to continue to work together," McMillon said. "We do not need to separate ourselves. We do not need to build a wall around ourselves. We need to continue with building bridges.”

Polls are scheduled to open on November 7th at 6:30 a.m. and stay until 7:30 p.m. For more information on voting in Union County, click here
