CMS ready to reassess safety protocols at Friday football games

Dr. Crystal Hill tells WCNC Charlotte that the district will 'reevaluate' safety protocols when necessary.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friday night football is a tradition in towns across America.  But recently, from Statesville to Monroe, violence has led to arrests and interrupted football games across the Charlotte area.  A fight broke out at Harding University High last month.

In a WCNC Charlotte exclusive, CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill said the district continues to monitor the games.

"We've made significant changes. After every single football game we'll reevaluate," Hill said, appearing on WCNC Charlotte's Flashpoint.

Hill said that last week the district changed bag policies, limited ticket sales to prepay only and required chaperones for students under 16, in certain circumstances.

But Hill said the violence is part of a larger, cultural problem.

"It's not just at football games, right? People are just being bad actors, in lots of places, but certainly have a responsibility to make sure that everybody is safe," she said.
