East Charlotte neighbors reflect on police attack

On Flashpoint, Greg Asciutto says the shootings are a setback for a community trying to defy crime trends.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After the shooting deaths of four officers, Monday, neighbors in east Charlotte are looking for answers.

"It's going to take significant time for the dust to settle and for our community to see anything other than what this is, a tragedy, " Greg Asciutto, Executive Director of the nonprofit CharlotteEast, said on WCNC Charlotte's Flashpoint.

Despite rapid growth and recent economic momentum, the city's east side has struggled with crime for years.

"You know, we've had historically had issues with crime since the late 90s," he said.

Asciuitto said the Monday's events are a reminder, despite progress, there's work to be done.

"We know summer is coming and it's unfortunate because I don't think there's a lot of optimism in short-term improvements to the situations that we're having," he said.
