NC leaders 'open' to Charlotte's latest transit plan

On Flashpoint, the NC House Speaker said he likes the new 'regional approach.'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After years of back and forth, city leaders might have new reasons to be optimistic about their transit plan.  On WCNC's Flashpoint, N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore said he likes the progress he's seen.

"I'm open to what's there and want to work and collaborate with leaders of Mecklenburg County and the region, as well as the business community on this," he said.

Recently, city leaders suggested a scaled back version of the plan, and suggested ditching a rail line to Matthews, and instead prioritized rail to Iredell County and more construction on roads.

"I liked the fact that it's a regional approach, I think that's important. But I do believe there needs to be a true emphasis on roads," Moore said.

Previously, state leaders said they would only support a 'roads-first' plan. The republican-dominated General Assembly must approve any plan because it requires an increase in the local sales tax.  Voters would have the final say in a ballot referendum.
