A partial win for Gov. Cooper in power struggle with General Assembly

On Flashpoint, Democracy North Carolina applauds a court's recent ruling.

RALEIGH, N.C. — This week, a three-judge panel temporarily ruled that North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper should have the power to appoint to three state boards, including transportation, public health and economic investment.

It comes after Republicans in the General Assembly passed legislation this session stripping the governor of some of his powers to make appointments.

"They're siding with the governor and they're siding with the people at this point to ensure there is a separation of powers," Joselle Torres, communications manager with Democracy North Carolina, said in an appearance on WCNC's Flashpoint.

"At the heart of the argument was the law went too far. And it violated that separation of powers and the rules that are embedded in the North Carolina State Constitution," Torres said.

A final ruling on the broader lawsuit could be months away.
