CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Despite a fractured U.S. House, Rep. Alma Adams is hopeful democrats and republicans can find some agreement.
"The Republicans are just barely in the majority, and we're barely in the minority," Adams said on WCNC Charlotte's Flashpoint. "That gives us an opportunity to come together and focus on those things that not only the citizens care about."
Adams expects some bipartisan agreement on issues surrounding the environment, housing, and transportation.
The 118th Congress got off to a turbulent start. It took republicans 15 sessions to name Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker.
"It just shows you how splintered the Republicans are," Adams said.
Eager to confront President Joe Biden and the Democrats, he promised subpoenas and investigations. “Now the hard work begins," the California Republican declared. He credited former President Donald Trump for standing with him and for making late calls “helping get those final votes.”
Republicans roared in celebration when his victory was announced, chanting “USA! USA!”
Finally elected, McCarthy took the oath of office, and the House was finally able to swear in newly elected lawmakers who had been waiting all week for the chamber to formally open and the 2023-24 session to begin.
