RALEIGH, N.C. — Barring some unforeseen circumstance, Jordan Lopez will represent State House District 112 in the General Assembly starting next year. Lopez, who would serve east Charlotte, is running unopposed in the primary and general election.
The 25-year-old said a "sense of urgency" drove him to run now.
"Young folk have grown tired of just waiting for things to get better. And, especially now that some of us more of us are becoming able to run for office, coming of age to take these types of steps, we want to see things happen," Lopez said.
Lopez grew up in east Charlotte and attended CMS. After graduating from UNC Greensboro, he served as a legislative aide in the General Assembly. He said that experience gave him insight into how legislation can be effectively passed.
"It's a matter of showing people that government can work. You just have to have leaders in office that are willing to put up the fight, willing to put in the effort and to see things through," he said.
Lopez hopes his candidacy inspires other young folks to get involved in politics.
