MATTHEWS, N.C. — A Matthews business owner is seeking a change a town law that would allow semi-permanent food trucks.
Gary Murray, the owner of Matthew Social House, has submitted a zoning application that, if passed, would create a new zoning type allowing the presence of these trucks, which the town is calling "concierge trucks." Murray's primary operative would allow restaurants, such as his own, to have trucks set up more permanently on private property. Under current town law, food trucks are considered temporary and cannot be set up overnight.
In April, WCNC Charlotte reported on increased enforcement of the town's rules governing food trucks. At the time, the Matthews Beer Temple, which is located adjacent to Murray's establishment, was seeking to use public parking spots for food trucks.
Matthews Town Commissioner Mark Tofano spoke to WCNC Charlotte at the time about concerns food truck would be taking up the already limited parking spots downtown.
"To use public rightaway and public parking spaces is against the ordinance," Tufano said.
The Matthews Town Council was scheduled to review Murray's proposal Monday night but chose to move the public hearing and any further discussion on the topic to March 11.
