New NC Emergency Management director is agency vet

Officials have promoted a deputy director to run North Carolina Emergency Management.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Officials have promoted a deputy director to run North Carolina Emergency Management.

Michael Sprayberry will take over his new job immediately. He was named to the post Wednesday by Department of Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan.

Sprayberry became deputy director of Emergency Management in 2005, overseeing the agency's budget and communications and working closely with local communities with both disaster prevention and response.

Sprayberry served with the U.S. Marines and has been in the North Carolina Army National Guard for 25 years. He replaces Doug Hoell, who retired earlier this month.

Shanahan says Sprayberry has consistently shown exceptional leadership.
