Alma Adams says Biden is 'best candidate' to win 2024 election

Adams put her support behind Biden as other House Democrats encouraged the president to step aside over concerns about his health and age.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rep. Alma Adams affirmed her support of President Joe Biden on Tuesday, saying the president is the best candidate to win the 2024 election and defeat Donald Trump.

Biden has faced scrutiny from several House Democrats, who encouraged the president to step aside following his performance in the first presidential debate with Trump. Biden's campaign has spent the last couple of weeks working to convince voters and lawmakers he's fit for a second term in the White House despite being 81 years old.

“President Biden has been an extraordinary president," Adams said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte. "Throughout his career, he has demonstrated that he genuinely cares about our country and its people, and he has an historic record to show for it. I will continue to stand with the president and the people who elected him to be our nominee. He is the best candidate to be in this race.”

Adams, who represents northern Mecklenburg County and western Cabarrus County, also endorsed Biden ahead of the 2020 election. She was the second North Carolina lawmaker to publicly back Biden's candidacy.

Biden wrote a two-page letter to House Democrats this week calling for an end to the intraparty drama that's divided Democrats since the first debate.

“We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” Biden said in the letter, distributed by his reelection campaign. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
