Josh Stein visits three churches in Charlotte to mobilize Black voters

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein spent his Sunday at three churches across the Charlotte area in his campaign for governor.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — National and local campaigns are making their final pushes ahead of election day, and everyone seems to have the same focus: churches.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein spent his Sunday at three churches across the Charlotte area in his campaign for governor.

“I’ve been called to a life of service like so many of you because of my faith and my family. My faith tells me that we’re each called to do our part and to make a difference," Stein said to the audience at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sugar Creek Road.

This was just one of many stops, both by his campaign and Harris/Walz supporters, as a part of the "Souls to the Polls" movement.

The congregation is predominantly Black, something Stein addressed in his speech.

"The Republican General Assembly gerrymanders legislative districts to discriminate against Democrats and Black people," Stein said. "The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals wrote that they targeted Black voters with quote 'almost surgical precision.'"

WCNC Charlotte interviewed Stein after his speech and asked about what he hopes to see changed if he's elected.

“If we can elect a Democratic governor, I’m running, and break the supermajority and just have a few more democrats in office, then we can have more balance," Stein said. "No one party has a monopoly on good ideas. Let’s work together to solve problems for the good of the people."

He was joined by supporters of State Rep. Alma Adams and Arkansas State Rep. Denise Ennett. Both asked in their speeches who had already voted. The majority of the congregation raised their hand.

This is just one day of a larger push to mobilize Christian and Black voters statewide on both sides of the aisle.

Former President Donald Trump visited with faith leaders in Concord last week.
