RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina State Board of Elections said Tuesday that Mark Robinson's campaign has agreed to pay $35,000 in fines after an audit revealed a committee supporting the Lieutenant Governor violated state campaign laws.
An audit of the "Friends of Mark Robinson" committee was carried out based on their 2019 and 2020 reports. According to the BOE, the audits revealed that the committee "had accepted contributions and made expenditures in violation of state law."
Friends of Mark Robinson formally entered into a settlement agreement on December 6, with the condition that the committee pay $35,065.52 to the State Board. According to the BOE, these funds will go to the NC Civil Penalties and Forfeiture Fund.
The committee paid the money on December 10. According to the BOE, the agreement is specific to disclosures made on the 2019 and 2020 campaign finance disclosure forms. It does not address reports from 2021 through 2024.
Robinson lost the 2024 North Carolina gubernatorial election to Democrat Josh Stein. His campaign was derailed, in part, because of a CNN story that claimed he made several sexually explicit and racist comments on the message board of a pornography site several years ago.
