CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republican Rep. Jason Saine, one of the most influential lawmakers who helped bring mobile sports betting to North Carolina, will resign from the General Assembly, according to WRAL.
Saine, 50, was first elected to the North Carolina House in 2011. He won reelection six times during that span, representing Lincoln County. His resignation will become official on Aug. 12.
Saine's resignation comes after the House and Senate were unable to pass a budget update during the 2024 session despite having a supermajority.
"It's pretty darn frustrating," Saine told WRAL last week. "You spend six months of your life trying to get to a final result and the final result is no budget. That's no fun."
Saine helped lead the charge for legalized mobile sports gambling in North Carolina. Early in his career, Saine earned recognition for fighting against puppy mills, earning an award from the Humane Society of the United States as a result.
