LANCASTER, S.C. — Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley's campaign will make a stop in Lancaster Friday as the former governor rallies supporters ahead of this month's South Carolina primary.
Haley is pulling out all the stops in the Palmetto State in her attempt to defeat former President Donald Trump in the Feb. 24 primary. With former Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis officially out of the race, it's down to Haley and Trump, with the former president holding a substantial lead to this point.
Haley will hold a rally at Indian Land High School at 6 p.m. on Friday. The event it expected to last around 90 minutes with Haley giving a speech to supporters about the importance of the South Carolina primary. The event is free to attend but attendees must RSVP.
Meanwhile, South Carolina Democrats will head to the polls Saturday for the party's primary election. After struggling in some early contests in 2020, President Joe Biden used South Carolina to propel his bid for the White House. Unlike four years ago, Biden now looks to South Carolina as a way to cement his campaign as the overwhelming favorite for a second term in the White House.
Challenging Biden on the South Carolina ballot are U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and author Marianne Williamson. Phillips received about 20% of the vote in New Hampshire, while Williamson received about 4%. Williamson was part of the crowded 2020 field that included Biden, but she dropped out before the first contests.
The South Carolina primary will be the first opportunity this year for Democratic candidates to begin accumulating the nearly 2,000 delegates needed to clinch the party's nomination.
