Vice President Harris visiting Charlotte on anniversary of Roe reversal

Kamala Harris is set to be in the Queen City on June 24.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Charlotte on June 24 to deliver a speech rallying reproductive rights advocates on the anniversary of the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

The White House confirmed the trip with WCNC Charlotte. NBC News reports Harris' visit is among several events the White House plans to hold this month to mark the anniversary and keep the issue of abortion rights front and center for the 2024 presidential election.

A White House official told NBC News Harris plans to draw a contrast between Republican-led efforts to further restrict abortion access and that of the Biden administration.

The exact timing and location for Harris' speech are not yet available.

Harris' Charlotte speech will happen exactly one year after the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision to reverse the landmark 1973 ruling on abortion rights. The court's conservative majority opinion sparked a push to support more Democratic candidates who typically oppose strict restrictions on abortion.

That push saw Republicans only just take a majority in the U.S. House, defying a historical trend in which the incumbent president's party typically sees losses during midterm elections. Democrats added one seat to their slim majority in the Senate.

North Carolina recently saw new abortion restrictions passed into state law, courtesy of the party switch made by Mecklenburg County state Rep. Tricia Cotham from Democratic to Republican. Despite a veto from Gov. Roy Cooper, a GOP supermajority overrode it.
