NC governor attends White House state dinner

Roy Cooper was among 300 invited celebrities, lawmakers and business executives for Wednesday's state dinner at the White House.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper was at the White House for Wednesday's state dinner honoring Australia's prime minister, his office announced.

Cooper was among several distinguished guests at Wednesday's dinner, which has seen a change of plans in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict. First lady Jill Biden confirmed that the B-52s would not perform, and that the entertainment would be instrumental music provided by the Marine band and the Army and Air Force Strolling Strings.

Wednesday's dinner honored Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was accompanied by Jodie Haydon. President Joe Biden invited Albanese to the U.S. on a state visit after he canceled a planned trip to Australia in May for crucial budget talks with Congress.

More than 300 lawmakers, business executives and celebrities were invited but the White House keeps the full guest list secret until just before they arrive for the event.

Carolina connections

Cooper wasn't the only person from North Carolina at Wednesday's state dinner. Jill Biden hired Asheville-based chef Katie Button to help White House kitchen staff prepare the night's menu. The offerings include butternut squash soup, sarsaparilla-braised short ribs and a roasted beet salad.
